ANALYSIS OF SPEECH INTELLIGIBILITY IN POST TRAUMATIC BRAIN INJURIES
Abstract
This paper focuses on PTBI and investigates how it affects speech intelligibility among patients, and how several factors determine the resulting prognosis and basic approaches taken by speech-language pathologists. It plays a role in improving the understanding of PTBI and management practises, thereby boosting the communication effectiveness of the patients. Only fifty participants from three hospitals in Islamabad, Pakistan participated in this study and this cross-sectional study was conducted. The data on the subjects’ speech intelligibility were obtained from the recorded conversations and evaluated by two standard instruments – The Glasgow Coma Scale and the speech intelligibility checklist. Such in-depth assessment requires the application of qualitative content analysis to the results. The first major type of theme was termed as ‘Cognitive and Physical Challenges’ while the second was termed as ‘Recovery and Adaptation.’ These included; speech intelligibility aspects which involved issues like the severity of the head injury, the level of cognitive recovery of speech-impaired patients and the quality of speech and language therapy given to them.
