N.A. Semashko – the fi rst people's commissar of health: A new century – new research horizons

Abstract

The article investigates the problem of insuffi cient knowledge of the life and work of the fi rst people's commissar of health, Nikolai Aleksandrovich Semashko. Documents from the collections of the Museum of the History of Medicine at the I. M. Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University are introduced into scientifi c circulation for the fi rst time, shedding new light on the work of N.A. Semashko as the chief editor of the Great Medical Encyclopedia, the head of the Department of Health Organization at the 1st Moscow Order of Lenin Medical Institute during World War II, as well as his role in the development of Russian endocrinology.
