Effect of anti tobacco warnings labels on tobacco users of Kanpur city: a preliminary study

Abstract

Tobacco is one of the major causes of death in India by causing number of diseases including carcinoma. In India under Control of Tobacco Product Act,  it is mandatory to print warning labels over all kind of tobacco products to make people aware about the side effects of tobacco uses. The study was conducted to observe the effect of warning labels on tobacco product on its users and its effect on tobacco addiction.

Materials and Method: A cross sectional study was conducted in tobacco users of Kanpur city. Total 770 participants were included in the study.

Result: Out of 770 participants the mean age of tobacco users was 40.3. 502 noticed the warning labels on the product, those who noticed warning 62% among them aware about health hazards of tobacco uses and 66% think about quit tobacco uses. Young age group users were more aware about the warnings. Females were less aware.

Conclusion: Positive impact on tobacco users have been seen in tobacco users but not all the tobacco users were aware about the warnings mentioned in the tobacco product
