Degrees and Titles
Doctor of Medical Sciences, Doctor of Historical Sciences, Ph.D. in Philosophy, MA in Catholic Clinical Ethics, Professor.
1999 – at the RAMS Medical Museum Research Center, D.A. Balalykin defended his candidate’s dissertation titled “The History of Surgical Treatment of Ulcer Disease in Russia (during the period from1880s to 1990s)”.
2003 – defended doctoral (Doctor of medical sciences) dissertation titled “The History of the Foundations and Development of Gastric Surgery as a Scientific and Clinical Field in Russia in the 19th and 20th Centuries” at I.M. Sechenov MMA.
2007– defended his doctoral (Doctor of historical sciences) dissertation titled “The Russian Schism in the Context of the Church and the State Relations in the Second Half of the 17th Century in Russian Historiography” at the People’s Friendship University of Russia. 

Academic Career
2001–2002 – worked at the Central Science Research Institute for Tuberculosis at the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences (RAMS). From 2002 to 2010 was a senior researcher at the RAMS Institute for the History of Medicine.
From 2006 to 2013 was a professor at the department of higher qualifications for medical workers at the People’s Friendship University of Russia.
From 2010 – was head of the department of the history of medicine, history of Russia, and culturology at I.M. Sechenov First MSMU of the Russian Ministry of Health.
From 2014 – was the vice-president of the Russian Society of Historians of Medicine (under president K.A. Pashkov).
D.A. Balalykin is the author of over 200 works on the history and philosophy of medicine and the history of surgical gastroenterology, including eleven monographs and one patent. Was a research advisor оf three doctors and four candidates of medical sciences and one doctor of historical sciences.

Honorary Titles, Awards and Prizes
D.A. Balalykin was awarded the Certificates of Merit of the Russian Ministry of Health for his healthcare service and years of diligent work (2014), the 850 Year Anniversary of Moscow Memorial Medal (1997), and personal gratitude оf the President of Russian Federation.

Research Interests
The history of medicine, the history of science, religious and philosophical preconditions for the development of scientific knowledge, the history of Russian surgery.

Professional Organizations
Member of the International Society for the History of Medicine (D.A. Balalykin is the official delegate of the Russian Federation), vice-president of the Russian Society of Historians of Medicine, deputy chairman of the Russian Society of Gastroenterology Surgeons, chairman of the Local Ethics Committee at I.M. Sechenov Moscow State Medical University, member of the advisory council on preventative medical sciences for the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation.
Chairman of the editorial board of the encyclopedic almanac “Anthology of the History of Russian Surgery”, member of the editorial board of Surgical Gastroenterology Bulletin, editor-in-chief of the journal “History of Medicine”.

Scientific Publications
The author of over 200 scientific publications, including five books on the history of surgery and philosophical problems of medicine, as well as in the field of historiography of the church and the state relations in Russia in the 17th century.
