Abstract

Background: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common hormonal imbalance in women of childbearing age, characterized by irregular menstrual periods and increased androgen levels. Laboratory tests, as well as ultrasound, can be used to diagnose PCOS. Neuregulin-4 is a new adipokine released from brown adipose tissue and expressed in many organs. It is essential in treating fatty liver and insulin-resistance diseases and can potentially promote white fat browning. Objectives: This study examined the relationship between serum NRG4 levels and obesity in PCOS patients. Patients and Methods: A case-control study was conducted at the Baghdad Teaching Hospital's Gynecology Clinic & Infertility Center in Medical City from September to December 2022. This study included 120 women between 18 and 42 years old, divided into two groups: sixty (60) diagnosed women with PCOS and sixty (60) healthy women. Results: Women with PCOS had significantly higher serum levels of NRG-4, insulin, HOMA- insulin resistance and free testosterone than the control groups. In this study, NRG-4 levels were significantly higher in obese and overweight PCOS women than in normal-weight women. Conclusion: It was shown that women with PCOS have significantly greater levels of neuregulin 4. ROC curve application on Neuregulin 4 levels demonstrated excellent sensitivity and specificity when comparing PCOS against control, indicating a good screening and dependable diagnostic test.
