Epidemiology of pediatric ocular trauma in Al-Anbar province. Iraq

Abstract

Introduction: Blindness due to ocular trauma can be prevented in majority of cases if treated properly. Objectives: To evaluate the epidemiology of different ocular injury in pediatric age group in Al-Anbar province. Iraq.Methods and Material: This study was performed retrospectively using medical archives of ocular trauma cases in patients aged 15 years and below who attended the ophthalmology departments in different hospitals in Al-Anbar province. Iraq. All records were classified according to age, gender, and etiology, and graded according to severity and ocular portion involved in trauma. This study was submitted and approved by ethical committee in college of medicine, AL-Anbar university Results: 564 patients who had ocular trauma were included in this study. Ocular related trauma was more rampant in individuals aging Between    5 to 10 years (38.3 %) ,10-15 years (16.6 %) respectively. Male patients (64 %) were more susceptible to ocular related trauma than female (36 %). Of 564 ocular injuries, 33patients (5.9 %) had open globe injuries. Conjunctival contusions with associated Sub-conjunctival hemorrhage were the commonest injury in 103 (19.3 %) patients. 53 patients (9.5 %) of all trauma patients were presented to the medical centers after 14 days from trauma. Homebased injury was the most common etiology for trauma (36.8%), while outdoor play area was the second most common (25.3 %). Conclusions: Individuals between 5 and 10 years were greatest susceptible to ocular related trauma. Homebased trauma was the most common place for ocular related trauma, outdoor play area was the second most common. With implementing common safety factors, most of ocular related trauma cases could be prevented or abridged.
