Abstract

The aim of the study was to establish vitamin D status among pregnant women in Anbar province. Methodology: A descriptive cross-sectional retrospective study was carried out in Al Ramadi and Falluja cities from September 2019–January 2020. The study was approved by the Scientific Committee of the College of Medicine at Anbar University. Data was obtained from outpatients attending Al-Ramadi and Falluja teaching hospitals. The purpose and method of filling out the questionnaire were explained to all participants. Females with chronic or endocrine diseases, gestational hypertensive disorders, gestational diabetes, patients on vitamin D treatment, and patients with multiple pregnancies were excluded. The calculated representative sample size was 200 females to be selected randomly. Vitamin D levels were assessed using the ELISA technique. Results: Vitamin D deficiency was present in more than three-quarters (76.5%) of the participants. Younger women aging less than 30 years have a higher prevalence of vitamin D deficiency than older women. Vitamin D deficiency is more common in late gestation (56% of cases) than early gestation. Conclusion: Low vitamin D is common among pregnant women in the west of Iraq, with higher prevalence in young age and late gestation. This is a common health problem worldwide. Vitamin D supplementation may need to be implemented as part of routine antenatal care
