At first, the institute was a part of the Russian State Medical University but in 1991 it received independence. In a relatively short period of time the Russian Ministry of Health’s Institute of Pulmonology became the head pulmonology center in the country, capable of solving many fundamental and applied problems. The pulmonary field in medicine was actively formed under the leadership of Chuchalin.
