Academic Career
In 1976, N.I. Briko enrolled as a graduate student in the department of epidemiology, where he successfully defended his candidate’s dissertation. From 1979-1982, worked as an assistant in the epidemiology department. From 1986 up to the present day, has been the laboratory head for the streptococcal infection research.
From 1995 to 1997, was the head of the course at the epidemiology course at the department of information technology and healthcare for post-graduate education.
From 1997 to 2008, he was a professor in the epidemiology department of I.M. Sechenov Moscow Medical Academy.
From 12 July 2004 to June 2005, worked as deputy head of the division of human welfare at the Department of Pharmacy, providing support for human welfare, science, and education at the Ministry of Health and Social Development of the Russian Federation and at the same time as a professor in the I.M. Sechenov MMA Department of Epidemiology.
From 2009, was the head of the department of epidemiology and evidence-based medicine at I.M. Sechenov MSMU.
N.I. Briko is one of the leading epidemiologists in the country. He developed the modern theoretical conception of epidemiology, defining its subject matter and structure. Under the leadership of N.I. Briko, foundational research on the epidemiology of streptococcal infections (group A) was carried out and a monitoring system employing new methods of laboratory diagnosis and prevention was developed. He carried out the first research in the country on the molecular epidemiology of group A streptococcal infections. He developed and implemented a system of epidemiological monitoring for group A streptococcal infections, including microbial and molecular-biological monitoring of the pathogen. He made a major contribution to the diagnosis of GAS infections. He developed a test system for detecting DNA of group A streptococcus (the streptococcal mitogen gene) using a polymer chain reaction. He developed an ELISA test system for the detection of antibodies of group-specific antigens of GAS. He developed and implemented a system for preventing GAS infections within organized groups of children and adults and demonstrated the great medical and preventative effectiveness of the Russian drug tomycidum.
The research Briko has carried out has paved the way for a new generation of sanitary-epidemiological regulations and guidance, providing new measures for monitoring and preventing streptococcal infections in the country. New methodological recommendations have been published concerning the epidemiology and preventative vaccinations for pneumococcal infections.
A new conception for preventing nosocomial infections in the country has also been developed under his guidance. N.I. Briko is the creator of the “globalization – infectious diseases” paradigm. He participated in the development of a new passport for epidemiology specialists, approved by the Ministry of Science Education in 2009.
In addition to his extensive scientific research, N.I. Briko has played a significant role in improving the epidemiology education for students and doctors.
He actively participates in the national and international science forums and has guided the defense of 8 doctoral and 12 candidate dissertations.
He has also taken several short-term service trips abroad.
In 1982-1985,worked as an epidemiology consultant in Algeria.

N.I. Briko is currently the head epidemiological specialist of the Russian Ministry of Health, the president of the National Association of Specialists for the Control of Infections Linked to Medical Treatment, a member of the presidium of VNPOEMP, deputy chairman of VNPOEMP, a member of the board of the National Science Society of Infectious Disease Physicians, deputy chief editor of the journal Epidemiology and Infectious Diseases, a member of the board of editors of five practical science journals.
In 2013 Briko founded a new social organization called the National Association of Specialists for the Control of Infections Linked with Medical Treatment, devoted to professional consultation, improvement, and development of professional connections and humanitarian contacts not only between hospital epidemiologists but between hygienists, microbiologists, immunologists, clinical laboratory diagnostic specialists, disinfectologists, doctors of various clinical specialties, clinical pharmacologists, healthcare managers, nurses and nurse managers, and also manufacturers and marketers of various products for diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of infections with the goal of cooperating on the development of the medical sciences and healthcare practices and improving the quality and safety of medical services and prevention of infections connected with medical services.

Scientific Publications
N.I. Briko has published more than 550 scientific works, coauthored seven patents and copyrights, five monographs, eight books, six textbooks, eleven manuals and guides for doctors and students, twelve teaching aids and test question collections, nine specialist training programs, eight methodological instruction document.
N.I. Briko participated in the publication of a unique set of interdisciplinary materials on infectious disease and epidemiology designed for three levels of medical specialist training: students of medical colleges, higher nursing education, and students of medical universities studying general medicine. He has edited Russia’s first manual for practical activities for students of infectious disease epidemiology and manual on general epidemiology and evidence-based medicine. He is the coauthor of the first textbook on epidemiology for preventative medicine and general medicine faculties.
These materials indicate an essential contribution to modern higher medical education and are indispensable for the process of integrating into the European system of higher medical education.
