Academic B.L. Cherkassky was a renowned scientist, one of the leaders of national epidemiological science and author of fundamental scientific works in the field of epidemiology. Cherkassky developed a socio-ecological concept of the epidemic process, which formulated the theoretical basis of epidemiological patterns of communicable diseases. In his proposed ecological and epidemiological classification of infectious diseases, he clearly defined environmental specifics of pathogen reservoirs and the peculiar features of transmission from the reservoir to humans. His work has important theoretical and practical significance in the field of epidemiological surveillance of zooanthroponosis infections. In this field Cherkassy’s leadership role is indisputable. Of particular interest is the study of prerequisites and precursory complications of the epidemic process in certain groups of infectious diseases, which is the basis of the epidemiological surveillance system’s rationalization. In the study of the globalization of the epidemic process, Cherkassky substantiated the position on specific social and ecological conditions for the existence of the world’s human community and its influence on the incidence of infectious diseases. Cherkassky paid attention to the elimination of infections, as well as epidemiological terminology, and possessed the highest degree of responsibility for his publications. Cherkassky is considered a world-class outstanding scientist and epidemiologist, as evidenced by his scientific works
